AI SEO Audit vs SEO Audit: What Your Old Audit Misses in 2026

Your SEO audit says the site is healthy. Meanwhile ChatGPT can't read it, Claude gets a 403 and Gemini doesn't know who you are. Here's what changes when the audit is for AI search, and the 15-minute version you can run today.

Why your audit needs an AI layer now

People still search on Google. But a growing share of buying questions now go straight to an assistant: "what's the best payroll software for a 20-person company?", "is X better than Y?". The assistant reads a handful of pages, writes one answer and names a few brands. If it couldn't read your page, you're not in that answer, however well you rank.

There's a second reason. In July 2025 Cloudflare, which sits in front of a large part of the web, started blocking AI crawlers by default for new sites. Many hosts and security plugins do something similar. A lot of businesses are now invisible to AI without ever having decided to be.

What a traditional SEO audit checks

A good SEO audit is still essential. It looks at how Googlebot experiences your site and how you compare with the pages that rank:

  • Crawling and indexing: robots.txt for Googlebot, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, broken links, redirect chains.
  • On-page: title tags, meta descriptions, headings, keyword targeting, internal links, duplicate content.
  • Technical: Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, HTTPS, structured data errors in Search Console.
  • Off-page: backlinks, referring domains, anchor text, toxic links.

All of that still matters, partly because Google's own AI features and Microsoft Copilot are built on top of their search indexes. But notice what's missing: nothing in that list asks whether GPTBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot can get in, or whether an assistant could lift a clean answer from your page.

What an AI SEO audit checks

An AI SEO audit looks at your site the way an AI assistant does when it answers a question. You'll also hear it called an LLM SEO audit or an AI search optimization audit; it's the same idea. In our Website AI Audit that's 43 factors in 8 weighted categories:

  1. 1
    AI crawler access (22%)

robots.txt rules for 13 crawlers, firewall and bot-protection blocks, noindex and nosnippet directives, sitemap, llms.txt.

  2. 2
    Answer-ready content (20%)

One clear H1, question-style headings, short direct paragraphs, lists and tables, specific facts and numbers, enough depth.

  3. 3
    Structured data (15%)

Organization, WebSite, page-type and FAQ schema that state facts in a form machines read without guessing.

  4. 4
Brand clarity, trust and off-site signals (30%)

Consistent brand name, About and contact pages, named authors, update dates, reviews, social profiles and a Wikidata entry.

  5. 5
Readable without JavaScript and technical health (13%)

Text present in the raw HTML, crawlable links, fast responses, canonical URL, language and page size.

5 things a normal SEO audit won't catch

1. A firewall quietly blocking AI crawlers

Your robots.txt can say "welcome" while your host, CDN or security plugin says "go away". SEO tools test as Googlebot or a normal browser, so they never see it. An AI audit requests your page identifying as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot and compares the responses.

2. Blocking the wrong AI bots in robots.txt

There are two kinds of AI crawler. Answer bots such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot fetch or index pages so assistants can answer questions. Training bots such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect data for future models. Google-Extended sits in between: Google says it controls whether Gemini can use your pages for training and for grounding its answers. Blocking pure training bots is a fair business choice. Blocking answer bots means you can't be cited at all. Plenty of sites copied a "block all AI" robots.txt in 2024 and blocked both.

3. Content that only exists after JavaScript runs

Googlebot renders JavaScript. Most AI crawlers don't: they read the HTML your server sends and move on. If your product pages are built in the browser by React or a page builder, an AI crawler may see an empty shell. An AI audit counts the words available in the raw HTML; under about 150 is a red flag.

4. No clear brand entity

AI models think in entities: this company, that product, this person. They connect your website to the entity "your brand" through Organization schema, consistent naming, sameAs links to your LinkedIn, X and Crunchbase profiles, and knowledge bases like Wikidata. SEO audits only check whether your schema has errors, not whether it says who you are.

5. Pages that rank but can't be quoted

A page can rank on keyword relevance and links and still be useless to an assistant that needs one clean paragraph to quote. Long intros, vague claims and answers buried in paragraph six don't get cited. AI-ready pages put the answer first, use headings that match real questions, and include specific, checkable facts.

How to run an AI SEO audit in 15 minutes

  1. 1
Audit your home page and your best money page

Run the Website AI Audit on your home page, then on the page that makes you the most money (pricing, a top product or service page).

    2 min
  2. 2
    Fix crawler access first

If any answer bot is blocked in robots.txt or by your firewall, fix that before anything else. Nothing else matters if AI can't get in. On Cloudflare, check the AI crawler and bot-fight settings.

    5 min
  3. 3
    Check what AI reads first

Look at the title, meta description and first paragraph the audit shows. Would an assistant know exactly what you do, for whom, from those three lines?

    3 min
  4. 4
    Pick the top three fixes

Use the "Fix these first" list. It's ordered by how many points each fix adds, so you don't spend a week on llms.txt while ChatGPT is blocked.

    3 min
  5. 5
    Re-run after you ship

Audit again after each change and keep the report link, so you can show the before and after.

Does an AI audit replace your SEO audit?

No. Think of it as a second lens. Google still sends most websites more visitors than any assistant, and much of what helps Google (fast, crawlable, well-structured pages) also helps AI. The AI audit covers the blind spots: crawler access beyond Googlebot, quotability and entity signals. A sensible order is SEO audit for the foundations, AI audit for access and answer-readiness, then content work on the pages that matter most.

Ready isn't the same as recommended. The audit tells you whether AI can use your site. Whether it does name you depends on everything the web says about you.

What we see across thousands of AI answers

After the audit: check whether AI actually recommends you

Once AI can read your site, the real question is what it says. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude the questions your buyers ask and see whether you're named, in what position, and next to which competitors. Our free AI visibility check does exactly that, and paid plans track it daily so you catch drops the day they happen.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI SEO audit?

An AI SEO audit checks whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity can reach, read, trust and quote your website. It covers AI crawler access, content without JavaScript, structured data, answer-ready content, brand entity signals, trust and off-site signals.

How is an AI SEO audit different from a normal SEO audit?

A normal SEO audit focuses on Googlebot, rankings and backlinks. An AI SEO audit adds checks for AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot, firewall blocks, whether text exists without JavaScript, whether your brand is a clear entity, and whether pages give quotable answers.

Should I block GPTBot?

Blocking GPTBot stops OpenAI from using your pages to train future models, which is a business choice. Make sure you don't also block OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, which fetch pages when people ask ChatGPT questions; blocking those keeps you out of ChatGPT answers.

How often should I run an AI SEO audit?

Run it after any change to your hosting, CDN, security plugin or robots.txt, after redesigns, and at least monthly on your key pages. Crawler blocks often appear after a host or security update without anyone noticing.

Is there a free AI SEO audit tool?

Yes. The GrowMarketingPro Website AI Audit is free: one audit a day without an account, five a day with a free account, and a PDF report when you sign up.
