How do AI assistants get Reddit content?
| Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini | Google's search index; Google has full access to new Reddit content through its deal with Reddit | New threads can show up as sources within days |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | A data partnership with Reddit announced in May 2024, plus past training data; ChatGPT search uses outside search providers | Strong long-term influence; new threads may show up less in live search answers |
| Other search engines (Bing, DuckDuckGo) | Blocked from Reddit's newest posts since mid-2024 | Assistants that rely on them see less fresh Reddit content |
In July 2024 Reddit changed its robots.txt to keep most crawlers away from its newest posts and comments. Google kept access, reportedly thanks to a $60 million data deal with Reddit. Two months earlier, Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership that gives OpenAI access to Reddit content through Reddit's data API.
What does the evidence show?
Ahrefs' data shows Reddit is the single most cited website in ChatGPT answers. A practitioner in r/aeo shared a smaller test of 60 US shopping questions in October 2026: Google's AI Overviews cited Reddit in 28 of 55 overviews, while ChatGPT search cited no forum threads at all. That's one person's test, not a study, but it fits the access picture above: fresh Reddit threads flow most easily into Google's answers.
What's missing is a clean link from "we commented in a thread" to "AI started recommending us". In the Reddit discussion about this exact question, the most honest replies said they couldn't prove it, and we can't either. We'd be wary of anyone who claims they can guarantee it.
How can you test whether Reddit helps your brand?
A commenter in that r/aeo thread suggested a test that gets closer to cause and effect than most. We've expanded it into steps:
- 1Pick prompts where Reddit is already cited
Ask Google's AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT your buyer questions and note which Reddit threads appear as sources. Those threads are already being read.
- 2Record a baseline
Run each prompt several times over a week and log whether you're mentioned. One run tells you very little. See how to track brand mentions in AI.
- 3Add one genuinely useful comment as yourself
In one of those cited threads, with a clear disclosure. Follow the rules in our guide to Reddit marketing without getting banned.
- 4Re-run the prompts weekly
Watch whether the answer starts reflecting what you wrote, or naming you. Give it a few weeks, since engines refresh at different speeds.
- 5Keep the other variables still
If you launch a PR push in the same month, you won't know what caused a change. Test one thing at a time where you can.
Where should Reddit sit in your AI visibility plan?
Treat it as one source among several. For Google's AI features, being genuinely present in the threads that rank for your category is worth the time. For ChatGPT, review sites, comparison articles and your own clear, crawlable pages matter at least as much, as we explain in brand mentions vs backlinks. And it only works if real people would agree with what you say, because they can reply.
Frequently asked questions
Does posting on Reddit help you rank in ChatGPT?
It can help over time, mainly through training data and Reddit's data partnership with OpenAI. ChatGPT search draws on outside search providers that are largely blocked from Reddit's newest posts, so fresh threads may influence live ChatGPT answers less than Google's.
Does Google AI Overviews use Reddit?
Yes. Google has full access to new Reddit content through its data deal, and Reddit threads frequently appear as sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Why does Reddit block other search engines?
In mid-2024 Reddit updated its robots.txt to block most crawlers from its latest content, keeping access for companies it has agreements with, such as Google.
Can I guarantee AI will recommend my brand through Reddit?
No. Nobody can guarantee it. The best you can do is take part honestly in the threads AI already cites, and measure whether answers change.
