What Reddit Really Says About AI Visibility Tools: 29 Threads, 977 Comments

Before you pick an AI visibility tool, it's worth knowing what people who've tried them say when no vendor is in the room. So we read the top replies in 29 recent Reddit threads where marketers and founders asked about tracking and improving their visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. Here's what we found, including a few things we didn't like hearing.

How did we do this?

We used SocialCrawl to search Reddit for threads about tracking or improving brand visibility in AI answers, then pulled up to 15 top replies from each. We removed three threads that drifted off topic. That left 29 threads from 20 subreddits, with r/aeo, r/AskMarketing and r/GEO_optimization the most common.

We counted a brand as named in a thread if any of the replies we read mentioned it, and grouped replies into themes by the words they used. It's a reading of public discussion, not a survey. Upvotes in small subreddits are low, so we treat them as a rough signal only. We didn't store or use anyone's username.

Which tools do people actually recommend on Reddit?

Threads where each tool or product was named in the replies (29 threads)A thread counts once per tool, however many replies named it.
Semrush7Already in many teams' stack; some liked the AI toolkit, one reply complained about being pushed to an annual plan
Google Search Console6Free, trusted, and often named as the only measurement people really need
Ahrefs5Mentioned alongside Semrush as the default SEO suite people extend to AI
Peec AI4The most named dedicated AI visibility tool; praised for data, criticised by one reply for a busy dashboard
Bing Webmaster Tools3Recommended next to Search Console, usually by sceptics
Profound3Named in roundups of dedicated tools
Otterly, Mentionlytics, AthenaHQ2 eachNamed as options, often with a price comment
Rankscale, Sistrix, AgencyAnalytics, Similarweb1 eachSingle recommendations, usually from people describing their own stack

The pattern is clear when you read the threads in full. Most recommendations weren't comparisons. People named the tool they already used for SEO and said it now covers AI too. That's why general suites lead the count, and why a newer, specialist tool can be invisible in these conversations even if it does the job well. We cover how that feeds into AI answers in why ChatGPT recommends your competitor.

What worries people about AI visibility tools?

  • Price (11 of 29 threads). Replies called the big tools "insanely expensive", complained about annual-only contracts, and one buyer asked for anything "under $99" a month. Several people said they'd built a cheaper tracker themselves.
  • Whether the data is real (9 threads). People debated whether tools that query AI through official APIs see the same answers users see, versus tools that capture the consumer apps. Both camps had a point: API answers can differ from the apps, and scraped answers vary with location and account.
  • Noise from one-off checks (7 threads). Several replies pointed out that the same prompt gives different answers each time, so a single check, or a dashboard built on one run per prompt, is a snapshot at best.
  • Vanity versus outcomes (10 threads). Many replies said the number that matters is leads and sign-ups, not a visibility score, and suggested asking new customers how they found you.

Why were the most upvoted replies sceptical?

The two most upvoted replies we read, with 24 and 20 upvotes, both argued that AI visibility is mostly the result of good SEO and a strong brand. One put it bluntly: "GEO is simply SEO 2.0." A third, with 10 upvotes, said Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are all you need and the rest is noise.

We think the sceptics are mostly right about the foundations and partly wrong about measurement. Crawlable pages, clear answers and a real reputation do most of the work, which is what our GEO vs SEO piece argues too. But Search Console can't tell you what ChatGPT said about you, which competitors it named instead, or which sources it cited. That gap is what tracking is for.

The data is useful for trends and not very reliable for single snapshots.

Can vendors take part without being called shills?

Yes, if they do it the way the best ones did. About 18 of the 298 replies we read came from people who said they built or sold a tool or service. Most got the same single upvote as everyone else. The two that did best, with 11 and 8 upvotes, opened with a clear disclosure, then gave detailed advice that would help the reader even if they never bought anything. One founder literally said they had a reason to sell a service and were telling people how to do it themselves.

The replies that went nowhere did the opposite: a tool name, "I'm the founder", and little else. We've turned these lessons into a practical guide: how to take part on Reddit without getting banned.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI visibility tool according to Reddit?

There's no consensus. In the 29 threads we read, Semrush, Google Search Console, Ahrefs and Peec AI were named most, but most recommendations came from people naming the tool they already used rather than comparing options.

Do Redditors think AI visibility tools are worth it?

Opinions are split. Price came up in 11 of 29 threads and sceptical replies were the most upvoted. Many people still use a tool or a spreadsheet to track a fixed set of prompts weekly, and value it most for spotting trends and cited sources.

Why does it matter what Reddit says about tools?

Reddit threads are among the sources AI assistants cite. In Ahrefs' September 2026 data, reddit.com was the most cited domain in ChatGPT answers, so the brands people recommend in these threads have an advantage in AI answers too.

How did you analyse the threads?

We searched Reddit with SocialCrawl, read up to 15 top replies per thread, counted which tools were named and grouped replies into themes by keywords. It's an analysis of public discussion, not a survey, and we didn't store usernames.
