How to Get Your Brand Recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude

When a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best tool for…", it names three to five brands. Being one of them isn't luck. It comes down to whether AI can read you, whether the web talks about you, and whether your pages answer the question. Here's the process we use.

How does ChatGPT decide which brands to recommend?

An assistant's answer comes from two places. The first is what the model learned in training: brands that are widely and consistently described across the web are "known". The second is live search: for many questions ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude search the web, read a handful of pages and build the answer from them, often citing the sources.

Getting brand mentions in ChatGPT (what some call trying to "rank in ChatGPT") is part of GEO, generative engine optimization, and LLM visibility more broadly. It gives you three levers: be readable (crawlers can get in), be mentioned (the pages AI reads talk about you) and be quotable (your own pages answer the question clearly).

7 steps to get your brand recommended by AI

  1. 1
Make sure AI can read your site

OpenAI says ChatGPT search relies on its OAI-SearchBot crawler; sites that block it don't appear in ChatGPT search answers. Check robots.txt and your firewall for OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and Bingbot. The free Website AI Audit tests all of them, including firewall blocks.

    Day 1
  2. 2
List the questions buyers actually ask

Not keywords: full questions. "Best CRM for a 10-person real estate team in India", "X vs Y for invoicing", "is X worth it?". Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, Reddit threads and your competitors' comparison pages. Aim for 25 to 50.

    Day 1
  3. 3
Check what each assistant says today

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude each question. Note whether you're named, your position, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. Our free AI visibility check does this for you.

    Day 2
  4. 4
Get onto the pages AI cites

The cited sources are your target list: "best X" roundups, review sites, comparison articles, forums and directories. Get listed, earn reviews, offer data or a quote to the authors, and correct anything outdated about you.

    Weeks 1–8
  5. 5
    Publish answer-first pages

For each important question, have one page that answers it in the first two sentences, with specifics: who it's for, price, how it compares. Honest comparison pages work well. See how to write content AI assistants quote.

    Weeks 2–6
  6. 6
    Keep your brand facts consistent

Same name, description, category and pricing on your site, LinkedIn, G2, Crunchbase, Google Business and directories. Add Organization schema with sameAs links so AI connects them all to you.

    Week 2
  7. 7
    Track it and repeat

AI answers change between runs and after model updates. Track the same questions daily or weekly, watch the trend, and double down on the sources and pages that move it.

Why the sources AI cites matter more than your own site

For "best" and "vs" questions, assistants lean on third-party pages: roundups, reviews and community threads. If those pages don't mention you, it's hard for an answer to include you, however good your website is. That's why step 4 usually does more than any change to your own pages.

What makes a brand easy to recommend
"Acme is an innovative, all-in-one platform that empowers businesses to unlock growth with cutting-edge solutions."No category, no audience, no price, no proof. AI has nothing specific to say about it.
"Acme is payroll software for Indian companies with 10 to 200 employees. It files PF, ESI and TDS automatically, starts at ₹999 a month and is rated 4.6 on G2 by 300+ customers."Category, audience, specifics and third-party proof. Easy to quote and easy to match to a question.

How do you measure AI recommendations?

  • Mention rate: the share of your questions where the assistant names you.
  • Average position: where you appear in the list when you're named.
  • Share of voice: your mentions compared with competitors' across all answers.
  • Sentiment: whether the description is positive, neutral or negative.
  • Cited sources: which pages the answers rely on, so you know where to work.

Because answers vary, a single check can mislead. Ask key questions more than once and look at the trend over weeks. GrowMarketingPro's paid plans ask key questions three times and average the results for this reason.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, publish clear pages that answer the questions buyers ask, get listed on the review sites and roundups ChatGPT cites in your category, and keep your brand information consistent across the web.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Organic answers can't be bought. OpenAI has introduced ads in ChatGPT, which are labelled separately; they don't change which brands the answer itself recommends.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Crawler changes can take effect within about a day for ChatGPT search, according to OpenAI. Getting mentioned on third-party sources and seeing it reflected in answers usually takes weeks to months.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors and not me?

Usually because the pages it reads mention them and not you, your site is blocked or unclear, or your brand isn't described consistently. Check the sources cited in answers to see where competitors are winning.

Is getting recommended by Gemini and Claude different?

The principles are the same, but each uses its own crawlers and sources. Gemini relies on Google's index and the Google-Extended setting; Claude uses Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Track each assistant separately.
