How to Write Content That ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude Actually Quote

AI assistants don't quote whole pages. They lift a sentence or a short passage that answers the question cleanly. Write for that, and you're easier to cite in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI features. Here's what a quotable passage looks like, and a template to use on every page.

How do AI assistants pick what to quote?

When ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude searches the web for an answer, it pulls in a handful of pages, finds the parts most relevant to the question and writes a response from them, often citing where each point came from. Long introductions, vague claims and answers hidden halfway down a page are easy to skip. A short passage that answers the exact question, with a concrete detail, is easy to use.

None of this works if assistants can't read the page in the first place, so check crawler access first. Our robots.txt guide for AI crawlers covers that.

8 rules for writing content AI quotes

  1. 1
    Answer first

Open each section with the answer in one or two sentences. Explain, qualify and add detail after.

  2. 2
Use the question as the heading

"How much does X cost?", "Is X better than Y for Z?", "How long does X take?". Match the words people actually type or say.

  3. 3
    Be specific

Prices, numbers, dates, names, locations and limits. "Starts at $79 a month" beats "affordable plans".

  4. 4
    Say who it's for

Name the audience and use case: "for Shopify stores with 1,000+ orders a month". Assistants match brands to the question's context.

  5. 5
    Keep passages self-contained

Each paragraph should make sense on its own, without "as mentioned above". Quoted text loses its surroundings.

  6. 6
    Use lists and tables

Steps as numbered lists, features as bullets, comparisons as tables. They're easy to read for people and easy to extract for AI.

  7. 7
    Back claims with sources

Link to the source for every statistic, and add your own first-hand data where you can. Original numbers are the most quotable thing you can publish.

  8. 8
    Add an FAQ

Four to six follow-up questions with short answers, marked up with FAQPage schema.

A page template for AI search

Copy this structure
H1: [The question or topic, in plain words]

Quick answer (40–80 words):
The direct answer, with 1–2 specific facts.

Key takeaways: 3 short bullets

H2: What is / How does [topic] work?
Answer in the first sentence. Then explain.

H2: How much does it cost? / How long does it take?
Specific numbers. Table if there are options.

H2: [Your product] vs [alternative]: which is better for [audience]?
Honest comparison table. Say when the other option fits better.

H2: How to [do the thing], step by step
  Numbered list.

FAQ: 4–6 questions, short answers
Sources: links for every statistic
Author: name, role, why they know this

Works for product pages, guides and comparison posts.

Make your brand easy to name

Being quoted isn't the same as being recommended. For an assistant to name your brand, it needs to know what you are. Describe your company the same way everywhere: one sentence with the category, audience and what makes you different. Put it on your home page, About page, LinkedIn and review profiles, and in your Organization schema. If your descriptions disagree, AI has to guess, and it usually picks a competitor that's clearer.

Then measure it: run the Website AI Audit to check answer-readiness on the page, and the AI visibility check to see whether assistants start naming you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write content for AI search?

Lead every section with a direct answer, use question-style headings, include specific facts and numbers, use lists and tables, add an FAQ and cite sources. Make sure AI crawlers can read the page.

What is AEO writing?

AEO (answer engine optimization) writing structures content so AI assistants and search features can lift a direct answer from it: question headings, answer-first paragraphs, concise passages and FAQs.

How long should an answer passage be?

Around 40 to 80 words, or two to four sentences, is a good target for the direct answer. Expand with detail afterwards.

Does schema markup help AI quote my content?

Structured data such as FAQPage, Organization and Product states facts clearly in a machine-readable form. It supports good content; it doesn't replace it.

Can AI-written content be quoted by AI assistants?

Yes, if it's specific, accurate and adds something new. Generic AI drafts rarely get cited. Add first-hand details and check facts before publishing.
